Yartar

A collection of characters encountered in and around the town of Yartar.

Sir Gavin
Human
Status: In Yartar
Sir_Gavin.jpg
Yartar’s imperious Captain of the Guard, Sir Gavin is both an accomplished rider and a formidable mounted knight. As commander of Yartar’s renowned cavalry, he maintains a attitude of superiority. Sir Gavin has a clear dislike of adventurers and other “riff-raff”, possibly stemming from the sharp rise in crime that occurs around the time of the Annual Fighting Tournament. Due to this, as well as his obvious lack of pity in carrying out his duties, his first meeting with you was accusatory and borderline-insulting. It was later revealed that Sir Gavin was part of Yartar’s conspiracy of executing the tournament’s winners and friends, personally throwing Barberch into the pit below the Mayor’s mansion.

Lord Alexander Tanas
Human
Status: In Yartar
Lord_Alexander_Tanas.jpg
The mayor of Yartar is an imposing man, sturdy of body and stern of face. Lord Tanas gave you a polite but lacklustre welcome when he greeted you for the traditional post-tournament meal at his mansion, suggesting either boredom with the situation or that he considers you beneath him. He barely reacted when Barbarch cut him off to declare that the food was poisoned, immediately skipping straight to activating the pit trap under your seats. Lord Tanas finally showed some emotion when Barberch and Quarion held him at sword-point, but even then he merely cursed your unwillingness to die, speaking to you as if you were cattle resisting the slaughter. Actual fighting seems to be something he disdains.

Lady Illyana Tanas
Elf
Status: In Yartar
Lady_Illyana_Tanas.jpg
The wife of Yartar’s mayor is elegance personified. Lady Tanas dresses with an opulent grace and speaks with a fluid dignified air, even when casting spells to murder you or ordering her guards to ignore that you had her husband’s life in your hands. She appears to be a spellcaster of some talent, her power likely coming from the Archdemon Graz’zt, whom she seems besotted with. Lady Tanas explained that you are necessary sacrifices, and was almost disappointed that you wouldn’t kill yourselves on her command.

Walster
Human
Status: In Yartar
Walster.jpg
Walster is the official in charge of the organisation and execution of Yartar Annual Fighting Tournament. Despite this position, he is warm and polite in speech, and seems to be genuinely worried about anyone getting injured whilst fighting. Walster has patiently explained the rules of the tournament to each of the entries, including Barberch and Muk. During the tournament itself, Walster acted as announcer and referee. When Red-of-Hand struck out at Mo with killing intent, Walster stopped the proceedings to investigate and make sure the cleric was alright.

Woodsheart
Halfling
Status: In Yartar
Woodsheart.jpg
An ancient beggar, dressed in tattered rags. Woodsheart “the Cursed” has led a sad life full of problems, culminating with his current state. Despite asking for only a few coppers, Muk gave the beggar an entire gold piece. In return, Woodsheart offered to help with anything you may need, but this offer was cut short by the arrival of Smilin’ Jim, another beggar that the halfling clearly fears.

Smilin’ Jim
Human
Status: In Yartar
Smilin' Jim.jpg
Smilin’ Jim gets his name from his ever-present grin, but it is not a pleasant smile. Seeing you giving money to fellow beggar Woodsheart, Smilin’ Jim quickly rushed over to receive the same treatment. Upon being rejected, he called for Slow Harry, an ally, and used the man’s arrival as a distraction to steal from Muk’s coin purse. During this time, Smilin’ Jim held an unconcealed knife, which he fortunately avoided using. Clearly insane, you were able to subdue the beggar and hand him over to the guards, recovering Muk’s stolen funds in the process. Smilin’ Jim has sworn revenge, however.

Slow Harry
Half-Elf
Status: In Yartar
Slow_Harry.jpg
An ex-ranger, Slow Harry’s “slowness” was explained by Woodsheart as arising from an old head injury. The remainder of his past is a mystery to you. Now, the half-elf is easily led and tricked by those who pretend to be his friends, such as Smilin’ Jim. The beggar convinced Slow Harry that you were bad guys, and he attempted to wrestle Quarion to the ground. Luckily, you proved to be more than capable of defending yourselves, and were able to subdue the confused man without harming him. Last you saw, the watch were taking Slow Harry back to the guard house for help.

Olaf
Human
Status: In Yartar
Olaf.jpg
The owner and barman of the Dusty Barrel – Yartar’s favourite tavern for tournament attendees. A savvy businessman, Olaf understands the profit to be made in so many wandering adventures… as well as the danger. Whilst he verbally attempts to stop any fighting, he makes sure to stay clear away from the action. He also makes sure to clean up after any incident, such as dragging The Shark’s unconscious body out of the tavern: Sir Gavin’s distaste for the rough nature of the tournament’s competitors is well known, and the City Watch will come down hard on establishments that allow criminal activity.

Ashera
Human
Status: In Yartar
Ashera.jpg
Ashera is the barmaid of the Dusty Barrel, and an unusual one at that. She wears exotic clothing rather than a uniform or apron, and seemed almost amused at the brawl between Red-Of-Hand and The Shark in her workplace. She also seemed bored with the effort of serving people, reading out the menu with a weary, emotionless drawl. Despite this, Ashera appeared to be reasonably friendly and curious about the tavern’s patrons, often asking questions about their trips and why they were in town. It was discovered that this was all an act to learn more about the combatants, as the barmaid was really a spell-caster in the employ of Lady Tanas.

Amelia Ashcroft
Half-Elf
Status: In Yartar
Amelia_Ashcroft.jpg
A excitable and energetic young lady of noble birth, studying under Ky of the Band of the Wolf for swordsmanship lessons. Amelia’s high spirits and passion for learning (especially about adventuring) often cause her to forget to be “ladylike”, but when she calms down she can be refined and polite. In either case, she appears to be affable and intelligent.

Essen
Human
Status: In Yartar
Essen.jpg
A would-be tournament battler, Essen took himself out of the competition by injuring himself during training. This came about due to the number of spellcasters entering in this year’s tournament, which Essen feared would clash with his defensive style of shield and spear. One “can’t block magic” after all. He appears to be a friend or acquaintance of Verol, but is a good deal more welcoming than the dwarf. In fact it is possible that Essen helped Quarion to get through to Verol, as elsewise the latter wouldn’t have listened to the former’s warning about the medallions without Quarion first entering the tournament.

The Shark
Human
Status: In Yartar
The_Shark.jpg
An angry bruiser of a man, clad in an outfit apparently made from the remains of a dead shark. Glowering at everyone in the Dusty Barrel, he was easily drawn into a brutal melee by Red-Of-Hand’s mocking. Even armed with spiked knuckledusters and a terrifying fury, Red proved the stronger fighter and The Shark was dragged out of the tavern unconscious.

D’Arby
Half-Elf
Status: In Yartar
D'Arby.jpg
A gambler of some skill, encountered in a side room of the Dusty Barrel by Muk. D’Arby had just bested two other gamblers (a human man who stormed out and a gnome woman who stayed to watch further) when you all passed by. Inviting you in with a wave, only Muk took the bait. D’Arby then offered the halfling a choice of games. Choosing one based on skill and dexterity, Muk was surprised to find himself repeatedly losing. After some time of this, and after losing a not-inconsiderable sum, Muk gave up in anger. The gambler merely smiled and told him that he (and his friends) can come back any time. Noticeably, D’arby has a strange air about him, with unusual clothing and a weird speaking pattern.

Dohrim
Dwarf
Status: In Yartar
Dwarven_Blacksmith.jpg
Owner of the Yartar Blacksmithery, Dohrim was held hostage by Hagnall’s gang after they were knocked out of the tournament. Whilst they were ransacking the place, Barberch arrived and came to the fellow dwarf’s aid. She eventually defeated the entire gang, with the blacksmith risking his life to protect her from the shop’s most dangerous item – a magical gauntlet that rusts through weapons and armour. In reward, Dohrim loaned Barberch a ceremonial breastplate to wear whilst he repaired her platemail, and later allowed you to shelter in his shop to rest and recover.
