Tournament Combatants

The known entrants to this year’s annual fighting tournament in Yartar, minus those met elsewhere, such as battlers from the Band of the Wolf.

Slayer

Status: In Yartar
Slayer.jpg
A masked and heavily armoured swordsman of unknown race, Slayer is a surprisingly cautious warrior. Notably he employs psychological warfare during his fights, producing numerous taunts and threats . Despite his tactics of intimidation, Slayer was deftly defeated by Muk in the first round of the tournament. Extremely fond of the word “punk”, both as a noun and as an adjective.

Sai
Elf
Status: In Yartar
Sai.jpg
A rather haughty and aloof elf, Sai was the only competitor in this year’s tournament to rely solely on ranged weaponry. This, along with the archer’s natural reflexes and speed, appeared to be working well in the first round, until Jerra cast a protection spell on himself which nullified her attack. Dragged into melee, Sai was quickly dispatched. Later she aided you against the enormous construct created by the wild and agitated Ravid released into Yartar, though her arrows had little effect. By the time the Ravid had been calmed enough to flee, Sai make her way away from the scene.

Jerra
Human
Status: In Yartar
Jerra.jpg
A ‘spellsword’, able to cast magic like a wizard but also adapt easily to close-range fighting. Jerra’s combination of a two-bladed sword and both offensive and defensive magic proved more than a match for Sai, and almost bested Muk in the second round of the tournament. Even on the brink of defeat, the mage showed an unbreakable calmness and a keen intellect, continuing to ration out his remaining spells until the battle’s end.

Hagnall
Human
Status: In Yartar
Hagnall.jpg
A seemingly vainglorious swordsman, who greatly celebrated victory over Baz in a decidedly below-average battle. Whilst clearly skilled, Hagnall showed unnecessary amounts of pomp in his entrance, leading to the crowd quickly turning to booing when his opponent refused to even fight back. Against Fury, however, Hagnall was clearly outmatched and found himself quickly beaten. After the tournament, it was discovered that he was the leader of a gang made up of Xanthias, Dendron and Baz. Fueled by their defeat, the gang attack the local blacksmithery and Hagnall himself acquired a powerful magical gauntlet that could rust clean through an opponent’s metal items. This was all for naught, however, as Barberch was able to single-handedly overpower the entire group. Currently, Hagnall is unconscious and awaiting arrest.

Baz
Dwarf
Status: In Yartar
Baz.jpg
A ragged and unkempt dwarf, clearly unused to being observed by so many people at once. Baz appeared nervous and apprehensive upon entering the arena, and then never moved from his starting location once the fight began. He was unable to even swing his axe during the match, as his opponent Hagnall was secretly his boss. Later, during the assault on the Blacksmithery, Baz held the blacksmith whilst the gang looted. Once Hagnall was defeated, however, he was quelled into surrender by Barberch’s stern voice. Indeed, Baz seems especially timid around the cleric, being unable to meet her gaze and blushing when looked at.

Harold
Human
Status: In Yartar
Harold.jpg
Harold wields twin swords at a blistering speed, clearly favouring agile dodges and accurate attacks to wide powerful swings. In the tournament’s first round, he overcame Dendron by being a little more skilled and a lot more composed. However, this cold exterior continues outside the fighting ring, giving Harold an unwelcoming and antisocial bearing. In the second round of the tournament, Harold was expertly disarmed and knocked unconscious by Red-of-Hand, much to his anger.

Dendron
Human
Status: In Yartar
Dendron.jpg
A physically tough but mentally weak fighter whose weapon of choice is dual axes. Dendron has speed and power on her side, but repeatedly fell for Harold’s feints and parries during the first round of the tournament. She continued to get angrier and angrier until eventually her temper boiled over and she replaced finesse with rage, quickly leading to her defeat. As one of Hagnall’s gang, Dendron set about ransacking Yartar’s Blacksmithery, and hurled insults at Barberch when she arrived. Barberch responded by breaking her nose. Dendron was eventually beaten when one of her axes ricocheted off of Barberch’s warhammer, knocking her unconscious.

Eben
Human
Status: In Yartar
Eben.jpg
A possible acquaintance and fellow ‘spellsword’ to Jerra, it can be assumed that Eben is equally wise and skilled. Sadly, the old man was unable to demonstrate this in the first round of the tournament, as Red-Of-Hand raced over and surprised him with a vicious beatdown straight off the bell. Eben barely even had time to draw his quarterstaff, let alone cast a spell, in what was shortest fight of the tournament so far.

Verol
Dwarf
Status: In Yartar
Verol.jpg
A dwarf obsessed with the art of fighting, Verol has entered Yartar’s tournament several times over the years, always being defeated. In the first round of this year’s tournament, he was once again knocked out, this time by Mo, and expressed despair at being beaten once more. Verol is a descendant of the dwarven hero Bismarck, and therefore was once holder of one of the sister medallions to that of Quarion. Despite this, he views such baubles as unimportant compared to his hammer, shield and armour. Verol is extremely surly, even for a dwarf, and doesn’t associate with strangers that haven’t proved themselves in combat, but Quarion and Essen were able to convince him to listen to the warnings of the former. The dwarf agreed to meet Quarion at the Dusty Barrel after the tournament to discuss the dangers of the medallions, where he revealed that his own medallion had been sold years ago.

Xanthias
Human
Status: In Yartar
Xanthias.jpg
Xanthias provides a great example of why one shouldn’t drink heavily before a fighting tournament, having gone crashing out in the first round to Lorelei. That said, despite you seeing him drinking all night at the Dusty Barrel, he was still a fencer of above-average skill and reflexes. Xanthias is jovial and unreserved when drinking, but not when hungover. A member of Hagnall’s gang, Xanthias engaged Barberch with canny footwork during the assault on the Blacksmithery. Repeatedly finding holes in her armour to exploit, Xanthias foiled the cleric until his boss joined the fray, though quickly made a bid for freedom when Hagnall fell.

Lorelei
Elf
Status: In Yartar
Lorelei.jpg
A black-cloaked swordswomen of unknown allegiances, wielding a blade infused with lightning. Lorelei has not yet spoken to you, but has taken time to briefly study Barberch and Muk, possibly sizing them up as potential opponents. In the tournament’s first round, she handily defeated Xanthias, demonstrating both a high level of skill even without her lightning sword, and a distain for the drunkard himself. The subsequent round, however, Lorelei was unable to penetrate Mo’s heavy armour, and found herself on the wrong end of a war of attrition, even after assuming a defensive stance.
